Among the top ten most sophisticated theatres in the world, Istana Budaya is the first theatre in Asia equipped with cutting edge stage equipment that is on par with the Royal Albert Hall in London. The main building takes the form of the “sirih junjung” - a traditional arrangement of betel leaves used in Malay weddings and welcoming ceremonies and is divided by function, based on a traditional Malay house.

The Istana Budaya or also known as the Palace of Culture, is Malaysia's main venue for all types of theatre including musical theatre, operetta, classical concerts and opera from local and international performances. It is located in heart of Kuala Lumpur city, next to the National Art Gallery.

Established in September 1999, this theatre is located just beside the National Art Gallery along Jalan Tun Razak in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. This state-of-the-art theatre construction started in the year 1995 and completed 3 years later. It was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
